Hi! I'm Debbie Cooks, and I teach 7th grade English at Union 6th and 7th Grade Center. This is my second year of teaching, and I love it! I'm sure that has a lot to do with the AWESOME group of students we have at Union.
I have lived in Tulsa for most of my life. I love living in Tulsa, and I couldn't wait to move back to Tulsa after college. Speaking of college, I graduated from Oklahoma Baptist University in 1998 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Elementary Education. I have endorsements to teach middle school language arts and Spanish. I am a proud OBU alumni, and I am an avid Bison basketball fan.
I began my teaching career at Union 6th and 7th Grade Center in August, 1998, teaching English in the Rice team. We did several exicting things during the 1998-1999 school year. One of the most memorable was being voted to get a pie in the face while we were raising money to buy Christmas gifts for less fortunate students in our school. As you can see, Ms. Lim had way too much fun giving me my award.
I am looking forward to the 1999-2000 school year with a great deal of anticipation. This year will be an exciting year as my classes learn to become writers and readers. I have spent all summer planning and organizing things for our reading-writing workshop. I believe that 7th grade English is all about learning how to write about things that matter. I believe that students must know how to write and how to write well in order to communicate in our ever increasing global society. I also believe that students need to read about things that matter to them. Students must become fluent readers in order to be contributing members in our community. Because good readers become good writers and good writers are good readers, my English class will focus on teaching the skills need to become good writers and readers.
